History

Engine Co. No. 6 is the oldest firehouse in the District of Columbia, even
predating the professional fire service in the city. Founded in 1855,
the building was the first of well-known Washington architect Adolf
Cluss's nearly 100 buildings to be constructed in D.C. Today it remains as one of
only 11 still standing. Originally home to Metropolitan Hook & Ladder 1, it later became Engine Company 6.
The building was decommissioned as a firehouse in 1974 and was
left abandoned and neglected for almost 40 years until five
local restauranteurs and longtime friends, Jeremy Carman, Gavin
Coleman, Paul Holder, Paul Madrid, and Tim Walsh, began restoration in 2011.
The objective - to restore the firehouse back to its former glory and remind visitors and
locals of the importance of this building in the District's history. As
operators of Town Hall in Glover Park and the
Dubliner Irish pub in Capitol Hill, the owners have used their many
years of experience to help bring a vibrant dining and bar location back
to the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood.
